Council on Foreign Relations - Think Global Health

The subscribe CTA is now fixed at the top of every device, and a new archive section at the bottom of the page allows users to browse past newsletters.

Think Global Health (TGH) is a global health publishing platform run by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

This project focused on improving how users subscribe to and explore

the weekly newsletter, while also streamlining the editorial workflow. Although subscriber numbers increased by 28% over the past year,

the experience still had several usability and operational issues.

Problems

Inconsistent CTA placement and limited access to past newsletters disrupted the user flow, reducing subscriptions and content engagement.
Duplicate publishing increased editorial workload and left less time for strategic work.

Goals

Easier subscription and discovery for users.

Smoother workflow for editors.

Final Outcome

Iterations

CTA Placement : Explored multiple CTA placements for visibility and consistency across devices

Archive Page Layout: Explored list, grid, and filterable formats

Impact

These updates improved clarity, access, and efficiency for both users and editors. The final designs were implemented with stakeholder alignment, and measurable outcomes were tracked after launch.

Takeaways

UX isn’t just for end users

This project taught me that UX can also improve internal workflows. By collaborating with developers to automate the content process, I learned how design decisions can support not just the user experience, but also the efficiency of cross-functional teams like editors.

Small decisions, big impact

What seems like a small detail such as the placement of a CTA button, can significantly affect the user journey. Maintaining consistency across devices helped reduce confusion and naturally guide users toward the intended action (like subscribing). Using real user data (such as device traffic ratio) to inform design decisions reinforced the importance of a data-driven approach.

Sustainable design over novelty

Rather than building entirely new UI components, I worked within existing systems and design guidelines. This choice wasn't just about efficiency, it minimized development effort and complexity, making the solution easier to implement and maintain. I realized that good design isn’t always about reinventing, but often about finding the most effective and sustainable path within real-world constraints.
